Monaghan United exit the League of Ireland

PRESS RELEASE

MONAGHAN UNITED FC

Dated 18th June 2012

Monaghan United after much deliberation and soul searching have decided to bring to an end it’s involvement in Airtricity League of Ireland, this decision was a hard one and not taken lightly but it was felt that this was the only real option left to us at this time.
Monaghan United entered the National League back in 1985 and while it’s been tough it has been an enjoyable journey, we have made many friends and forged great links within the football family. However for a number of reasons this was no longer sustainable and with a heavy heart we decided to bring to an end our involvement with the Airtricity League of Ireland.
The reason we have taken this decision is mainly but not only financial. To keep a team playing at the highest level in this country is expensive and with the clubs inability to tie down a anchor sponsor, coupled with the rising costs of membership of senior football and the lack of support from the national league it was felt that no other option was available.
However this is in no way the end of Monaghan United in fact it is a new beginning, a new direction has been chosen by the club, and it is our intention to pour all our energy, experience and facilities into the development of football in the county of Monaghan.
Monaghan United will sit down with all of its members and interested parties to explore how best to achieve this.
Monaghan United would like to extend our gratitude to our manager and players who throughout this time have been very supportive and indeed our decision to leave at this time is to allow these players to find other clubs as soon as possible. We would like to wish them all the best of luck in the future.
Once again may I thank all of our members, supporters, sponsors and the good people of Monaghan for their kindness and we have been assured of their support going forward.

Finally Monaghan United would like to take this opportunity to assure all our creditors that all accounts with them will continue to be honoured.

Yours in sport

Jim McGlone

As a Shelbourne fan I just want to say I’m really sad to see that Monaghan Utd have had to come to the decision to leave the League. It’s a sad day and I wish your Club all the very best in its endeavours for the future. Hopefully we’ll see you back in the League in the not too distant future.

  2. Elieen says:

Very sad to hear this news and very sad for Jim McGlone who has devoted years to this club, which meant so much to him!

This is what happens when only 200 people turn up for your home matches.

  6. Dan Smyth says:

    Very sorry to hear this.
Nobody likes to see a club pull out of the league.
Time for the FAI to give real support to domestic clubs. Unfortunately Monaghan Utd are probably only one of many clubs in a similar situation.

I hope that ye will return to the league of Ireland at some stage in the future and forn the time being, that Monaghan United will continue to partake in the lower leagues. It would be disappointing to think that there will never be a club from Monaghan United playing soccer again. I wish ye the best and hope to hear that ye have managed to return at some stage in the future (to the league of Ireland).

It is clubs like Monaghan United that soccer in Ireland is all about. Not just the senior soccer international team. If the fans who went in their droves to support the irish team, did the same for their local clubs, then clubs like Monaghan United, Sporting Fingal, Cobh Ramblers, Kilkenny City and Galway United might still be in operation today.

  10. Bernard says:

From talking to the three Monaghan folk I work with in Munster they don’t care or worse, don’t even know about the club. I feel sorry for the genuine association football supporters in Monaghan that support Monaghan United FC who can’t drum up any interest for the club from their fellow countymen. It seems to me that County Monaghan is getting the team it deserves.

very sad day for all involved with the club but surely theres a big company in the county that could have saved the club or helped in someway hope to see ye back in the league soon as you need clubs like yours in the league
